Hello all, I have just decided my on my dissertation area which is going to be outdoor play, however I am struggling on what my title should be and which aspect of outdoor play I should focus on. For example I was thinking of researching the value of outdoor play in the foundation stage but I am worried that is too vague. HELP!!x

i am a yr 2 student on an early childhood studies degree course. i have been asked to complete a research project (which will be in the style of a miniture dissertation, ready for my big one next year!)
i am struggling to think of a title and i thought that your area was an interesting one, as i am interested in possibly becoming a teacher.
what areas did you focus on and look at?

I did not formally produce a title until my dissertation was almost finished. Initially I had a working title which changed as the project progressed.

Hiya Nat, Make sure its something your interested in because u can soon loose focus quickly. i also did my minature reserach on outdoor play which sets u up 4 ur dissetation in final year. Outdoor play is a very important factor now, especially now as the new curricululm has been introduced. So theres lots of literatur out there!! i cant remember what exactly my title is but i will get on the case and find it out!! Good Luck, Rebecca

I did my dissertation on outdoor play throughout the year. I wanted to find out why staff would say 'we can't go outside, it's raining' and children would say 'it's raining, can we go outside'. I identified an area that I wasn't very happy about within the setting as the attitude at the time went against most of the teachings of theorists such as Macmillan and Isaacs amongst others. This was very interesting and involved visits to other settings where they did go outdoors every day. Consequently, we have changed our practice so that we now go outside every day except during torrential rain. I agree with Beckylou - you must be interested in the subject, or else it will be an even harder slog! There are all sorts of topics you could choose, but if you choose one that you can act on like I did, you can actually see the benefits (or not) taking place in front of you throughout the year
