Displaying photos - advice please!
Displaying photos - advice please!

Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice or guidance...
What are the general guidelines for displaying photos in nursery setting? Can the first name of the child be displayed alongside their photograph for peg labels, displays etc?
Thanks

There are no general guidelines- it will depend on the setting's guidelines.
We display photos and names and have never had any negative comments from anyone.
Why wouldn't you be able to display children's names?

Well I thought it was okay, but my manager has taken the display down due to confidentiality?
I checked all our policies and there's nothing in there about photos and names together. It's only an internal display so I couldn't see the problem either. The parent's all really liked the seeing the photos so I'm a bit disheartened as it took me a long time to print, laminate etc.

That's madness. In our room we have a big key-person board with our photos, our names and photos of the children and their names too. we also have a display with photos of the children and their families with names, that the parents have brought in. other rooms have photos and names on pegs and water bottles. there is a big display in the entrance with photos and descriptions including names, of children busy during the nursery day. Even in learning journeys, there are photos of children with other children with their names.
I think your maanger has misinterpreted something along the line.
What happens if a child turns wearing a t-shirt with their name on, or a cap or a necklace/headband etc? does she make them take it off?
I wear a name badge and have my picture on the staff board, is that a breach of confidentiality too?
i hope your manager is reading this!!

I hope she isn't!!!
We wear t-shirts with our nemes on, and our key worker displays hve staff photos on permanently. It does feel like madness - I put the children's names on their photos for letter/name recognition, sense of personal identity etc. Really didn't see a problem with it but apparantly it's a serious issue where I work!
We're a pack away setting so other people do use the hall when we're not there, but the photos and displays go into a locked cupboard which only we have keys to.

this does seem like madness. I do recall being told by our LA that we cannot display a full name (first name and surname) any where that will be viewed by the public, i.e. enterance halls. I'd have to take every display board down if i didn't use names, it develops a sense of belonging. That really is daft. Depending on how confident you feel i would ask where it states you can't use names with the manager. ALthough that could be asking for trouble.

I totally agree with all the comments! Plus at our nurseries, and the children love it, we have self registration, which Ofsted also like! The childrens name and photo are laminated with velcro on the back , placed in a basket and the children find their name and stick it onto the board when they arrive at nursery. We also have names on coat pegs and the birthday board. I would ask your manager the reasoning behind taking down the display.

Thanks for all your feedback, it's good to know it's not just me who thought this was unreasonable.
I've checked all of our policies etc and theres nothing which states it's not allowed.
Maybe I'll bring it up on Monday if I'm feeling brave! It's a real shame as the children love seeing their photos - many of the children wrote their own names which I laminated alongside their indivdual photos so it's a shame for them not to be able to see it anymore.

Let me know how you get on! And ask her, you are not being unreasonable!

It does sound like your manager is being a bit over-zealous. We use names+photos for several things, like coat pegs, lunch mats and water bottle labels as well as on displays. Only displays in the classroom though, not reception.
The only possible issue I can see is if you have children where there are child protection etc concerns - for example we have several children who cannot be photographed for anything that will leave the nursery like local newspapers or websites, and also their photos cannot appear in other children's learning diaries as these leave the setting if parents want to look at them at home.
