Hi Jacqui

Hi Everyone
Community Nursery Nurses also with community nurseing teams providing support to children and parents in their own homes.
I know many community nursery nurses have gone to to their hospital play specialist training, as these skills are really very useful in the type of job, and their roles have developed into community play specialist / nursery nurse.
Haveany of you thought about area of training?

Hi there,
was wondering if anyone can tell me how you got the job of community nursery nurse/ where these jobs are advertised?
I am a play assistant at a primary school and have an NVQ2
Community Nursery Nurse. - 25-05-07 18:19by: hatthar
Hi
I would expect you would need a minimum of a level 3 child related qualification to work as a community nursery nurse, as much of the work would be unsupervised as you are alone with famlies in their own homes.
All NHS posts are advertised on the NHS Jobs website www.jobs.nhs.uk
RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 09-01-12 18:06by: Slinkey23

Hello everyone,
I have been a nanny for 10 years, and only have experince of working within a nursery on a temp/ad hoc basis between jobs.
Do you think I would have any chance of getting a job as a cnn? I am NVQ 3 qualified and did a year of a midwifery course that I later decided was not the career for me. But had experience of community midwifery visits.. have I got a hope in hell of even getting an interview??
Any advice would be very very much appreciated! or if you have an insight into what they are looking for / interview or application tips
sorry to be asking so much, but if yo can help that would be great.

Hi there Im a bit confused I was wonderin if u could help me? I've nearly compleated my CACHE level 3 diploma in childcare and wanted 2 no if I could become a community nursery nurse and how.
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 07-11-08 18:55by: leanne
Hi Rosie. I can't see why you shouldn't beable to apply for a cnn post with the qualifications you have got. But I do think they sometimes like you to have a few years post qualifications.
You need to go onto www.jobs.nhs.uk. Thats where I have applied for a few jobs within the nhs.
If there are any advertised just have a look in the person specification as this will tell you what they require.
Good luck.

As for questions. They tend to ask sinario questions, 'What would you do if you had a 'phone call from a parent asking about sleep issues with a 2 year old?' 'asking about toileting issues with a 3 year old' 'asking about feeding issues with a faddy 18month old' etc, etc.

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 02-03-08 19:53by: Sugar & Spice
Hi, I have been in post now as a Community Nursery Nurse for almost 12 months and enjoy every minute of it. I have worked within Childcare for over 16 years but this is by far the best job, although it is very different to anything I have ever done.
I work within a Health Visiting Team and our caseload is very diverse which means we need to use Interpreters to carry out most of our work, which takes some getting used to. In our Community the parents do not place any importance on play so in the homes that I visit I very rarely see any toys.
With this in mind I set up a Parent and Child Drop In Session where I provide stimulating educational activities for the children and encourage the parents to become involved, which is a huge task but it is working slowly and we now get those who attend weekly. When I came into post there was no money put aside to buy equipment so I had to put plans forward to purchase some, I was successful and gained a £1,000 budget not without blood, sweat and tears though. The group has been running now since summer and we get regular attendance.
Another part of my role and a big part is doing 2 Year assessments, these I do as home visits where I complete Speech, Language and Health Promotion Questionnaires and complete a development assessment and refer where necessary. From these visits I then create my own workload by doing follow up visits where required covering behaviour, toilet training, dietary advice and family support.
We run two baby clinics a week where I do the Health Promotion boards, this include sourcing relevant material, displaying and promoting it.
I get to go on lots of courses that help me in my role and I am currently applying to a local University to do a Foundation Degree in Sept, which the team and my line Manager are supporting me in.
As I have been the only Community Nursery Nurse within the tPCT I have made the role my own, we have two new Nursery Nurses starting shortly and I have been asked to mentor and supervise them.
If you need to know anything else I will only be too pleased to help.

hi can anyone help me got interview for community nursery nurse on monday morning? any help appreciated
by: shazza
Hi All,
I have worked as a CNN for a few years now and although I love my job working with a team of HVs is never gonna b easy !!! First of all, they r a dying breed so most have been in the job for many years and seen their role change maybe for the worse, they carry huge caseloads which consisit of mostly vulnerable families and work under pressure the whole time. However as for working with CNNs I feel that maybe the skills we have could b seen as a threat !! We meet many of the requirements to meet the needs of families and the job role . As Nursery nurses we play valuable part in the team to provide a positve service to these families and it can b very rewarding role. I would describe my job as taking all of the best parts from a hvs role so I guess thats why they might find a cnn a pain!!! I have 90% client contact so if you love working with children under 5 and adults doing a whole range of activities eg baby massage, breastfeeding support, all elements of health promotion this could be the job for u and im certain in a few years our role as cnns will be more established . If anyone needs some more info before ur interview i wld b happy to help
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 16-07-08 16:52by: nicola williams
i know how you feel shazza. im in the same situation in the area i work in please email me dendlewilliams@yahoo.co.uk on how you have developed your role?

Hi Shazza, sounds like you really enjoy your job,I've got an interview for a CNN post next Friday and would welcome any advice ,interview question examples etc! Also did you have to do a presentation as part of your interview. Thanks
by: lou
hi shazza what interviews questions do you think they will ask?
what toys activities do you take?
how do you work with children and families who have little english and special needs?
thanks in anticipation
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 06-04-08 14:50by: shazza
My interview was a few yrs ago so things might of changed, also I think every PCT will be slightly different with regards to their expectations of the role. But my interview was pretty chilled out , they asked me the usual type of questions ie equal opps, past experience and alot on communication. To be honest communication is the key to this job as you will always refer to your HV regarding clients and to be honest you always need to protect yourself !!! after all a CNN will be getting paid half of a HVs salary !!! I would also recommend you join a union as they will cover any legal stuff. Most of the clients I work with have English needs but the NHS will provide interpreters and r good at providing groups to meet the needs of these clients. I would say it might be a good idea to study a little bit about the community where u might be working? then u can demonstrate some awearness of the type of families you might work with. I hope thats helped and good luck x

Hi All
Just wondering if any community nursery nurses refer children to the play specialist at the local hospital, if required, or if you refer children to the community play specialist or work closely with the community play specialist??
I know not all areas as yet have community play specialists, but does anyone work inconjunction with a play specialist? I would love to know how the system works for different areas??
Thanks Harriet :-)

I'm really interested to know how many community nursery nurses have a community play specialist working in their area or even as part of their team??

Hi, I had an interview on thursday, was very relaxed, but I was so nervous, they asked a bit about myself, past experience
what strength/weaknesses I have
bit on equality/diversity
how i'd prepare parents on a toilet training session
personal safety (looking after myself)
can't really remember much more!
Good luck and try to relax, also look into health visitor role and current child health issues like obesity.

you will probably be asked what you know about the healthvisiting role and what you understand about multi skill mix teams and what you could contribute towards such a team. You will also need to know a little about child protection issues. They will probably give you a scenario to talk through as well and they may ask you about different ages and stages of development.
Hope this helps, i have been a cnn for 16 months now and i am loving it, i run my own diary organise and deliver group sessions and have developed my own client list as well as running baby clinics, baby massage and carrying out developmental checks. Good luck for the interview and let me know how it goes.
RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 22-10-08 11:40by: Minxy
the senario i got was- you are at a clinic and a mother has come to see the health visitor. she has a toddler that is running round the room throwing things and a baby on her lap that is crying. you see the mother smack the baby. what would you do?
my advise for the interview is just sell yourself and keep mentioning good communication and meeting the individual needs of the child.good luck!!!xx
RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 22-10-08 18:47by: gio
thanks very much, how did you answer that one.i am really worries about it.
RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 22-10-08 18:53by: gio
thanks very much i am really worried about it. the child protection issues.do i just say how you go about it and how they work with the family etc,but i would always say the i would say to the health vister before calling social.and the stage of the childs development do they just say what a child should be doing at that age and then i answer. was your interview with a panel.

Hi I'm new to this site.
I have recently been offered a post as a community nursery nurse, just waiting for my letter of confirmation. Really excited to start but also very nervous, however I'm pleased I have found this site as I'm sure it will become very helpfull to get advice and support from you all.
Unsure when I will be starting, hopefully not long. I suppose I will have to wait for yet another CRB check which will take ages as usual.
If anyone can give me an idea of how long I can expect to be waiting before I start and what to expect when I do for the first few months I would be very grateful.
My email is graham.leanne.murphy@gmail.com
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 14-10-08 16:35by: Lauralou
Hi i am also new to this site which is fab for us cnn's!
Your start date will depend on your CRB check which is normally around 4 -6 weeks, once you start your job you will probably start shadowing a Health Visitor, Staff nurse or any other nursery nurses that may work in the area, going on home visits, doing the baby clinics, any groups that they may do and possibly visiting local childrens centres too.
My name is Laura and i have been a Community Nursery Nurse for 3 years, i am based in a GP Surgery and work within a Skill mixed Health Visiting team, can honestly say i absolutley love my job no day is the same and the job is so varied. If anyone wants any more info on the job role feel free to contact me on laurascullion333@hotmail.co.uk
by: Minxy
hello!!!!!!!
im all confused!! three weeks this friday will be when i was offered the cnn job.have been told today that although they dont know my start date i shouldhand my notice in.i dont want to be out of work though!!! will i have to wait much longer to start?x
by: leanne
Hello Minxy
I was offered a cnn post a week ago yesterday and have been told not to hand in my notice until all checks have been completed i.e crb, refrencees etc. Im guessing it will be about Dec before I start mine as it takes a while for the crb to be done and iv'e only just recieved it to fill in so it hasn't even been sent yet. How much notice do you have to give?
by: Ells
Hi all Community Nursery Nurses!
I have recently accepted the post of a Sure Start/Flying Start Community Nursery Nurse in the North West Wales area for the NHS and will be starting on 10/11/2008, I'm really exited and cannot wait to start!!
The post is a new post and have been told the role is my own to develop as no other CNN has done this post.
I have experience of working as SEN nursery nurse for 7 years and as a Occupational Therapy Assistant for the Children's team for 4 years so I think I have good experiences and ideas to take along to the new team.
Would like to know if there are any other CNN in my area to share ideas and experiences and also to meet up!
Looking forward to hear from you all. Ellen
by: Minxy
phew!!!!
spoke to my current job about the nightmare i was having with not recieving a start date and unsure what to do about handing my notice in.they were so good - just told me to tell them as soon as i know my start date and they will waver the months notice!!! so thats a load of my mind!!!
sent all my forms back ast week so hopefully shall recieve news of my start date soon!!! in the meantime - half term next week - bliss!!! shall miss all those school holidays!!x
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 21-10-08 17:40by: gio
if it is possible could you tell me what sort of question they ask you in your interview
by: Minxy
hi gio!
for that senario i said that i could see that the mum was clearly stressed so i would go over and ask if she needed any help at all? maybe i could suggest that i occupy the toddler whislt she dealt with the baby. i would also record the incident and pass it on to the health visitor. im not sure if this is the right answer but i got the job so it must have been ok!!! i guess in those situations you just use your common sense, communication skills and try not to aggrivate the situation.
with the child protection issue - just say what you have been trained to do. you record all incidents puting the time the date and what was actually said or witnessed and pass all records onto the designated child protection officer in your place of work. just mention that all these records are private and need to be stored in accordance with the data protection act.
i really wouldnt worry hun. ive only worked in nurseries and preschools so this role will be very different and new to me. my interview was very relaxed with two woman asking the questions. when i get nervous i tend to talk loads so it felt like they didnt ask me much - maybe because i answered all their questions whislt waffling on!!!!
if you want to know anymore then just ask. but relax and sell yourself- good luck!!xxxx

Can any of you experienced cnn's offer any help for me.
I have a 4 1/2 month old niece. She is breast fed but my sister is constantly feeding her as in between feeds she is very unsettled, but somtimes she doesn't seem to want that either. I have suggested weaning her thinking that maybe breast milk is not enough for her. She never seemend to like the baby rice so she is giving her an ice cube of purred vegtables once a day, which has taken alot of patients but she has now taken to it. However she is still very unsettled and demanding. This as you can imagin is geeting my sister down and she is now thinking of putting her onto formula milk, but this is the other problem she has. My niece does not seem to like it, she has tried many different ones Aptamil, SMA etc but she is the same on all of them. She even gets to the stage where she will start gagging on it. I have suggested trying a differrent bottle but my sister has said that it can't be that has she has taken breast milk out of the same ones.Going back to the gagging she seems to do that on other things like a dummy which my sister just doesn't seem to bother giving her one now and also occasionly when she is having her veg which I know could be down to the fact that she is not yet used to having solids, but this is worring my sister.
If anyone has any advice I would be very gratefull as I have ran out of ideas and to be honest I have never known a baby not like formula milk before. I have also suggested colic but that has been ruled out.
Thank you in advance.

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 12-11-08 22:24by: leanne
Hi Sara24
The only thing I have thought about buying ready for when I start my post is a diary. Not really thought of anything else but if there are other things that anyone else out there can suggest, I would also be gratefull to know.
Thanks and good luck with your new post Sara24
by: lizzy
Hi Sara and Leanne

Hi
I am thinking of applying for a cnn post, but the only thing putting me off a bit is having to talk to large groups as I don't feel very confident doing this. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a large part of the job when doing health promotion, or will you just be helping out the hv or school nurse ect. Thanks
by: leanne
Hi Lizzy
Thanks for your reply I am very suprised. I never knew that they would supply all those sort of things, It's a good job I havn't brought my diary yet I was waiting till after christmas unless I get to start before then, which I doubt.
Thanks again xx

Hi there
I have an interview coming up for a cnn but have not been a practicing nn for 3 years now can anyone recommend a really good child development book for me to brush up on my skills and get in the current know again
thanks
by: M
I too have an interview coming up in two weeks time. I have to do a 5 minute presentation on how the cnn can support children and families, I'm worried about this but at least I can prepare for it, unlike the many questions I might get asked and stutter my way through the replies. I know I can only do my best and nobody knows what questions might come up, but its daunting so its quite reassuring to see some of the posts in this forum, thank you all.
M
by: Aimee
Ive been reading this forum, and this looks like an interesting job. But does this job let you interact with children, or is it more focused on the medical side of things?
Are there specific qualifications needed for this type of job?
Also, are there any other jobs within the NHS like this?
by: Big Jo

by: Mickey
I HAVE REMOVED THIS POST DUE TO THE FACT, MY REPLY WAS INCORRECT AND I DO NOTHING BUT WAFFLE AND I'M OFF LOW INTELLEGENCE
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-09 20:24by: lizzy
clearly Bob and Mick you have missed something, in all your waffle you fail to mention if YOU actually know what the role of a CNN is ....... oh by the way role means job description and CNN means community nursery nurse...... obviously from what you say you have no idea what so ever. A CNN does not work in nor has contact with community day nurseries. I suggest before you come on this site spouting off you do a little research into what you are trying to preach about. Anyway ill leave it at that because i suspect you are of very low intelligence and you may need some time to digest this before you pen a reply, that and i simply cant deal with people who are not playing with a full deck ......
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-09 21:14by: lizzy
Think you may have removed this post because it was cleaely insulting to the people using this site ...... please do put it back and let people judge for themselves
by: mickey
Lizzy as always you appear to be right . thats what i do is waffle
Low Intelligence, I'm sure you must know me, thats bang on, Sod me I've got a stalker
Seriously though you are right, I should have checked my facts and because i;m of low Intelligence, I have had to ask my friend google, Like the original post should have.. But when i'm wrong i will say so AND I'M WRONG ok and if you would like to throw personnel insults, Lets begin, because you will lose, My low intellegence no's no limits as you can find out if need be
Community nursery nurses work with families and children (usually from birth to age eight) within community nursing, health visiting and family support teams. They use their specialist knowledge of children’s health needs to support parents and boost the child's development through play.
As a community nursery nurse, you would usually work closely with a health visitor to assess a family’s care needs. You would then work independently with the family, following an agreed care or play plan. Your clients could include:
families with sick children
vulnerable families living with mental health issues, addiction or disability
children in need of protection.
Your duties could include:
providing clear information and guidance to parents on health, childcare and child development
planning and running stimulating play activities with children and parents/carers
working in partnership with parents to develop their skills through positive play experiences
preparing a safe play environment, setting up equipment, cleaning and storing toys and equipment securely
assessing children’s development and skills and referring to other professionals when necessary
carrying out hearing screening of newborn babies
reporting unusual behaviour or signs of abuse.
You may also work with a health visitor to run health promotions workshops on issues such as:
behaviour management techniques
infant nutrition, weaning and toilet training
baby massage, baby yoga, and breastfeeding techniques.
You would work in a variety of community settings, such as the client’s own home, clinics, community centres or GP’s surgeries.
You may work with families experiencing emotional distress, such as domestic violence, and other difficult situations like bereavement. You would need to be prepared for dealing with challenging situations such as verbal aggression and parents who are uncooperative.
To work as a community nursery nurse, you will need:
a nursery nursing qualification (BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development,·CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education or·NVQ Level 3 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development )
around two years’ post-qualifying experience with pre-school children (you may also need experience in a variety of settings and with families with special needs)
a driving licence and access to a vehicle.
THERE YOU GO LIZZY . HOPE THATS ENOUGH WAFFLE FOR NOW, WHAT A FANNY, BUT THATS ENOUGH ABOUT ME,
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-09 21:11by: lizzy
Mmmmm ... let me see now you post areply about something you know nothing about you insult people you dont even know and then when someone challenges your unacceptable behaviour you spit your dummy big time and offer them an insult match ...... sounds to me like you need the intervention of a CNN who could talk you through some steps in behaviour management .....
by: Mickey
Lizzy before you spout off,
I said i had got it wrong, I got it wrong, But i'm big enough to back down and say sorry, I thought a Community Nursery Nurse, was the same thing as a Community Day Nursery, do i feel stupid YES, If You want to You can Hang me in Public lol.
PEOPLE I GOT IT WRONG I SAID AND SAY SORRY AGAIN, As for behaviour management My advice to you , Is this Please don't get personnel, or the old mick will certainly come back out to play, and he does have a super low intellegence , OVER TO YOU, LOVE
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-09 21:54by: lizzy
Apology accepted. As for getting personal i think you might find that you threw the first insult and as you may have established by now i dont back down easily . . . Apologise for the insult and then we will call it quits ...... OH! and by the way thanks for the offer but i certainly dont need your advice ..... OVER TO YOU DARLING !
by: Mickey
Thank you Lizzy, yes i did get it wrong, And what else can i say,
you Don't need my Advice DITTO Love DITTO
LISTEN HOW MANY TIME DO I HAVE TO SAY SORRY, OK HERE IT IS, I THREW THE FIRST INSULT, I'M TAKING IT BACK Now go and have a bath and chill out loooovvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-09 22:08by: lizzy

Hi everyone, just looking for some advice, i'm due to go back to work soon after being on maternity leave, and i have seen a advertisement for a CNN, the only thing that makes me nervous is that u work independetly, i dont feel i'm very confident in this area but would love to do the job as it sounds very very rewarding. Would u advise against applying this job due to my lack of confidence or is there a way round it?????any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
Michelle x xby: leanne
Hi Chelly
I am not a very confident person and always worried about working independently. I have been working in the community since Jan and I definetly recommend the job. You work alongside someone for the first few weeks and there always there for support if ever you need it and the health visitors within your clinic should also be there to give support and advice. There are quite a few nursery nurse's within the area that I work and we all support each other.
As long as you have the knowledge and match most of the person specification then go for it. Everything else will come to you.
Good luck with which ever you choose xx
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 20-05-09 22:16by: puddle
Hi
I have recently started as a CNN and feel really overwhelmed by the amount of information i have had to take on board. Is it just me or have any other new CNN's out there had this problem. Although i have years of experience as a nursery nurse and parent i suddenly feel really inadequate. I'm not sure if it's to do with the way i'm being mentored but i keep getting mental blocks when i'm trying to communicate advice. If this sounds familiar to any othr CNN's please let me know.
RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 23-05-09 23:42by: lizzy
hi puddle
this is a perfectly normal feeling, the job is bigger than anyone realises, there is lots of new skills and info to take on board, it took me a good 6-12 months before i felt confident in what i was doing, always remember to use your support network and stick with it because it is a rewarding job.
RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 26-05-09 00:17by: puddle
Thanks lizzy
It's amazing how just a little understanding from someone can be really reassuring. I start my second week this week and i'm going to try and be more positive and not try and run before i can walk. I think it was the amount of catching up i have to do as well, as regards reading up on all the latest policies and guidelines that was swamping my thoughts at times.

by: maddie
hi everyone
i'm new to this site, had an interview for a CNN job 2 weeks ago and thrilled to have been given the position. start work on monday and i'm really looking forward to it.
Sarah and Hails, the questions i got..
what motivates you and what has been your biggest achievement?
what are the negative traits of this type of job?
What do you think makes a team?
What child protection procedures do you follow?
what skills can you bring to this post, why should you be given the job before the person who came in before or after you?
How would my role fit in with the health visitors?
A couple of scenarios about angry/drunk parents
Try not to think to much about the question. most are directed at skills and experience. be prepared, know your strengths and place them in any question. I felt that i repeated myself a lot but i just stated all my strenghts ane experiences and how prepared i was for the challenges ahead and that i would give my absolute best of.
hope this helps
maddie x

by: Sarah75
Thanks for all your replies! I didn't get the post, they called me today, but they gave me lots of feedback and I feel confident now for the next one I apply for.
If you look at your job specification sheet, where it says 'interview' they will ask you questions on all of those things. Try to elaborate as much as possible and give lots of examples (I didn't elaborate enough, but I didn't want them to think I was rambling on).
Also, make sure you know about child protection issues and common assessment framework (CAF), equal opportunites/ diversity (say it's important for everyone to be treated as individuals and have access to the same care, as even though we are all the same we all have very different needs...she said I answered that perfectly), communication barriers (what are they and how can they be bridged) what a team can bring to you and what you can bring to a team (give as many answers as you can, can help you with some if you like as she said I answered that really well). Give as much info as you can about factors influencng child development, elaborate on them all (esp poverty if you will be working in a poor area). They asked me 'Why is confidentiality important?' Talk about the law and data protection act and parents only have the right to give consent for people to have access to info about their child. I was given a scenario regarding a mother who tells you their child has fallen down the stairs and that's how they got the mark on their face...what do you do? I said I would write it all down, what was said etc, document everything, sign and date it, inform my line manager and hand it over to the child protection officer. They asked me if I'd tell the mother and I said 'no'. The correct thing to say is that you will always follow the procedures (even if you don't know what they are yet until you have done your training) and that you should inform the parents of what you are going to do, unless you feel the child may be in more danger or if you suspect sexual abuse, as evidence can be got rid of.
You may know all of this already, but a lot of it is feedback from the health visitor, I hope it helps a little. I feel my lack of experience in any setting other than nannying let me down and obviously answering the child protection question wrong and not elaborating enough on others. But there's lots more posts coming up and the health visitor assured me that with a little more revision on a few areas, I'm bound to get a post.
Oh and don't worry to those that do have interviews, the 2 health visitors I had made me feel completely at ease, it was very informal all sitting in a little room with no table between us.
If you'd like me to go into more detail about all of the questions, then please let me know, I'd be happy to help!!!

I have just seen that someone has been asked in their interveiw what they would do if a parent was refusing to let you into their home and were shouting and screaming at you. Can anyone give any advice or id it just to follow any procedures in place?
by: LUCY ARNOLD
Hi Ive been working as a senior community nursery nurse now for 6 years. Interview advice:
1. always refer to following NHS guidelines and policies in relation to lone working, health and safety, data protection, child protection etc.
2. always refer back to liasing with the HV as they have case load accountability.
3. if a parent was screaming and shouting and refusing entry to the home, u have to consider personal safety.. also we are not an authority if we are refused entry we cannot force ourselves into that home. i would leave the property, and telephone the HV, and or manager. document the incident and refer back to HV. dependant on severity of incident it could need followin up by a referral to SS or GP for assessment e.g. child protection issues etc. It has to be documented and reported as this family could pose potential risks to futute health care profesionals visiting the home.
relax in an interview.. easier said then done i know. you have been selected as they think from seeing your application form youhave potential to be a CNN.
the pay band id of BAND 4 salary range £17-21k a year plus mileage allowances.
being a CNN is the best decision i ever made, i would never go back to nursery nurse in educational setting, the CNN role is varied, and i never clock watch. every day is different and you work by your own diary. the Role of the CNN is ever changing and adapting and i recommend completing a foundation degree in families parenting and communities. as it enhances your role and knowledge base. i completed mine in 2007 and have developed so much more already profesionally with taking the lead on training programmes for new CNN's new into post as a recent responsabiltiy.
goodluck for those who have interviews!

RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 01-11-09 11:34by: sharon_hammy
Hi jellybean, I started as a CNN 4 weeks ago and i love it. It is completely different to anything i've done before. I'm working with a great team of health visitors and nursery nurses and they've been really supportive to help me settle in to my role.
RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 01-11-09 16:23by: jellybean
Hi, I start tomorrow! What sort of things have you done so far? I have lots of induction courses to go on and they are hoping to send me on a delivering parenting classes course and a baby massage course. I'm pretty excited about it all. Would love to hear about a typical week/day?
RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 01-11-09 21:22by: sharon_hammy
good luck tomorrow! so far i've been shadowing the health visitors and nursery nurse that i work with, i've also spent days with some of the nunrsery nurses who work at other children's centres in the area i work in. The children's centre where i work has a large case load and has recently all been changed around so there's been a lot of catching up to do with development checks. I've sat in with a baby massage group which we do over 5 wks which is always finished by doing a weaning group whic is going to be my first group that i'm doing myself this wk which i'm a bit nervous about as its my first group. we have clinic once a week alternating between our children's centre base and one at a village hall because we cover a large area we do some of our groups elsewhere to help parents access the services. I will be running an under one's group along with the other nursery nurse i work with, and doing the 2yr developments. The nhs seem to be very good when it comes to training if there is something you want to do they do their best to help you. are you going to be working full/part time. I'm full time and can't believe how quickly the time goes. I'm doing my systm one training in the next couple of weeks then i can start visiting families on my own. If you post your email address i'll keep in touch will be good to see what things you're upto. again good luck tomorrow and congratulations on getting the job, you'll love it!!!!

Hi Lucy
I have been in the role 10 years and like you seen the role develop and new CNNs come on board. Those of us that have been in post a while feel we should be senior CNNs and working towards band 5. How did you go about having the levels put into practice?

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 10-10-09 23:29by: GracieM
Hi Kate, Congratulations on on getting accepted as a CNN am really pleased for you. I have an interview coming up and have been going over all possable qusetions I may get. Am really struggling over what to say about strenghts and weaknesses, in particular weaknesses! Arrgh what do you think??
How do you become a community numsery nurse and what is involved in this job?
by: kate09
Hi Gracie, I didn't get asked about my strengths and weaknesses but I was going to say that I haven't been in a nursery environment for a few years but I have gained much more experience through this. Try and think of a weakness that is not too bad and think of a positive side of it aswell eg, 'I tend to spend too long talking to the parents, but, I find they apprieciate this and I can build good relationships through this' etc Hope this helps a bit, Good luck!!!!!
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 11-10-09 19:52by: GracieM

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 20-11-09 19:47by: jellybean
Hope you enjoy it Kate, I have been in the job for a few weeks now and am beginning to do things 'solo' I really love it, I haven't regretted it for a minute.
by: KarenF
HI all I have been a CNN for over 5 years in Stroud (Gloucestershire). I really enjoy my job, I also do new born hearing screening as well as well baby clinics postnatal groups packages of care, e.g behaviour managment, parent support, weaning, other food issues with toddlers, etc. i also work with children in need, child protection i go to core groups case confrences, plus lots of other things... I also have CNN's new to the job shadowing me. Lots to keep busy no two days are the same.. Good luck to all new CNN's.... don't be worried to say no if you think work given to you isn't in your job discription.
by: kate09
Wow Karen you sound really busy!!! I just hope I enjoy the job as much as you sound like you do!!! I have heard that it is really varied, and the health visitors that I will be linked with have not worked with a CNN before so hopefully we can build the role to something we all need and like!
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 25-11-09 18:49by: jellybean
Hi Kate, good luck with the job. I went to shadow another CNN today and it was really interesting, if you can find another CNN in your area, ask if you can spend the day with her. My Health Visitors have been amazing, but it really helped me today to hear things from someone doing the same job as me, I really enjoyed my day. The other CNN now wants to come to me, once I am settled, just to see what I do, so that we can keep in touch and support each other. I also met someone on an induction course and we swapped emails. We just talk now and again to swap ideas etc, very useful. Good luck
by: KarenF
Hi Kate09 sometimes i have times were im not doing many visits but it does't last long, Try and get out with the HV's on there home visits as you will learn such alot with them, and if there are any CNN's close to your area, arrange to go out with them, once your induction time possibly about one month is over keep asking for work from the HV's as they might want to keep the work themselves at first, thats what i found when i started. Do worry about how long the training lasts its worth it in the end. take care when out on your own, make sure you no were the exit is and its not blocked just in case!!!
by: Lucy Murphy
Hi everyone,
I Started my job as a CNN in Jan 09, working with the childrens centre rather than the HV. I could not of imagined the difference from previoulsy working in a nursery to going into the community, and it does have both good and bad points. Good luck for all that have interviews, it is definetly one of the most challenging jobs i have had, no two days are EVER the same!!

Hi everyone,
i ahve a interview for CNN tuesday and was hoping somebody would give me some information on the job description and questions they may ask. i am a little nervous to say the least. i am reaching the end of my foundation degree; children, famillies and communites, so hopefully this would be an advanatge to me, i have also worked in childrens centres, covering creches and leading groups when the family outreach worker is on courses. my email is cherbearscc@aol.com if anyone can be of any help. thanx x
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 14-01-10 19:39by: jellybean
Hi Cher, I have been a CNN since October and love it. They tend to ask questions about what you would do if --- you had to give advice on - feeding, toileting, behaviour. They will ask you about your experience. It sounds like you have plenty. If they ask you something you really don't know say so, but say that you would be interested in taking a course to learn about it. I do a baby clinics, answer the 'phone and visit families at home to discuss behaviour, toileting, feeding , sleeping issues. I also do second visits to weigh babies and two year checks. This may give you some ideas of things they may ask. Question for you - How did you find the community degree? I am thinking of doing it?
by: jodi jackson
Hi Jacqui
I have been a Communit nursery nurse for the past 7 years, i was one of the first to be employed by the PCT in yorkshire and played a big part in developing the role. Happy to help and share ideas, just let me know

Hi everyone
Im new to the site, read all the posts, very informative thanku.I have an interview for a CNN in Chester a week on monday.Ive had management roles within private nurseries, ive worked in creches, childcare centre, i ve nannyed and worked for a childcare company in a ski resort in france for a season aswell. Im doing my best to prepare for the interview. I have alot of experience working in different childcare settings bt not so much within the community.Ive gone thru as many questions that may be asked as possible but quite worried about them asking about policies and procedures. Do I need to read up on them all again to familiarise myself with them. Not had many formal interviews either.
Any advice/help would be extremely appreciated.
by: kate09
Hi Julia, they wont expect you to know all of their policies and proceedures so just make sure that you say that you 'would always follow the policies and produres that are in place'. They always like to hear that!!!
Good luck!!

Hi,
I overheard a cnn talking the other day and they said that they are starting a degree in september and when they have completed this they can become a health visitor? Has anyone else heard this and do you know what the degree is? I thought you had to be a qualified nurse to become a health visitor??
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 28-01-10 20:02by: jellybean
Why do people always want to be better than they are? I love my job, I wouldn't want to be a Health Visitor I think CNN's have a very valuable place on the team, don't do your job down by believing there is something better out there, enjoy what you do and appreciate your input, you make a difference every day!
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 01-02-10 20:12by: KarenF
A CNN that i worked with has gone on to do a three year nursing training and then I think its another 2 or three years to become a Health Visitor, she has done this through a opening within the NHS, so she is getting a CNN wage and her uni fees paid for by the NHS. She had to go through a lot to get it. So you do have to have a nursing background still.
by: kate09
I do enjoy my job but I also dont see anything wrong with looking to the future. I would also enjoy the health visitors job and I feel that this is where I would like to aim-everyone is different. It really good that you have found a job that you love and can see yourself in forever, it is a shame that more people arent like that.

RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 22-02-10 20:51by: jellybean
Hi they are likely to be about possible situations ie - what would do if ........ a parent rang up to say their child won't eat, sleep, behave when out and about. It could be what if the question came up in clinic re ............. weaning, breastfeeding, nappies. What would you be looking for during a 2 year review etc etc, hope this is of some help. Basically, be yourself, say if you don't know, they won't expect you to know everything, just say you don't know but you would be willing to undergo some further training Good luck let us know how it goes
by: lauralou
hiya,
dont suppose anyone can give me any help in trying to contact my local community nursery nurse/play specialist team? i have looked on my local PCT website but cant find any details.
Im in the staffordshire area and just want to shadow a team for a day as an extra part of my training.
thanks
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 23-02-10 08:00
Hi
If you contact the GP surgery and ask who the Health Visiting Team are,the majority of teams are attached to a surgery.Hope this helps.
RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 24-02-10 12:07by: Stovin Hayter
This is a test. please ignore
by: Flossy
Yes GP surgeries are a good place to look. Play specialists work on Children's Wards as well as other areas so maybe give them a call at your local hospital, they may know more.

Hi all I am a CNN in Gloucestershire, we are going through lots of changes within our trust, one of them is a name change for are role, we have been asked consider been called an Assistant Practioner, anyone called something other than CNN? or any suggestions for a new title.......... cheers Karen
RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 03-08-10 23:30by: lizzy
Hi Karen
We are and alaways will be CNN if you research assistant practioner you will see it bears little resemblance to our role, fight your name change and remain a CNN xxx
RE: RE: RE: Community Nursery Nurse. - 04-08-10 20:28by: KarenF
I agree but we have to work to Skills for Health framework . So thats were they are getting the new title. Also the bosses are re writing our job decriptions!!
by: Janie
Hi,
I have been lucky enough to have an interview for a CNN next Monday 16th aug and am soooooo scared!! I have worked in education for 20 years so a very different role. I have also worked in a DSP for children with speech and language disorder for quite a bit of that time so i do have experience in behaviour and many different special needs. On the down side I am very rusty on baby development etc.
If anyone could help with some idea of questions that may come up and what they are looking for I would be really grateful. I am 49 so do you think that would be a negative for the role? I hope it would mean that parents would be happy to rely on you when your older with experience but not sure. I think I'm just getting worried as I would really love to get the job but not sure I stand a chance:(
My e mail is janiethorp@hotmail.com is anyone is willing to help. thanks so much. jane x
