Hi could any one tell me whether they do the calender, days of the week, weather with the children in nursery? If so when and how is it approached?

Many thanks

We do, it's done either with Morning Snack or during circle time. They do a mini refresher over afternoon snack too for the afternoon children.

I had to do it at my last nursery. 10 children and only 2 who understood what was going on. The others just had to sit still and count when told. Calendar/weather time is boring for most children. I felt awful doing it.

Do children really need to know that it's the 3rd of September and not the 4th of August? They want to know "how many sleeps until holiday" or that "It's the end of summer so that's why the leaves are going brown". How many children do you know really want to plan more than a week ahead? Days of the week are useful as different children are in different days, so they can work out when thier freinds are in, and when they go to nursery.

I would have a day line with an arrow that moves along it. I would talk about what time of year it is and about any special days coming up. I would do all that just before lunch so I don't interupt anybodies learning.

If you want children to understand weather, GO OUTSIDE!

We do it as part of registration every morning and afternoon. We talk about the day, date, month and weather, then what we are going to do in that session (with the child suggestions usually linked to the weather, such as have a beach outside or put wellies on for puddle jumping etc).

I agree with Tiggy and exactly those reasons were told to me by and Ofsted Inspector. We stopped it, but still talk about the weather but more in general conversation and, as we should, by taking the lead from the child!!!
