Barriers to Multi Agency Working

by: Katsie - 03-02-12 10:07

Hi everyone,

I am currently in my final year of sudy at university doing a BA (Hons) in education and training studies and have a dissertation to write. (Yikes!)

My chosen title is 'An investigation of the issues surrounding multi agency working' and I am keen to get some views from the users of this forum.. Ideally, people from an early years setting.

I am in the process of writing a literature review and also piloting questionnaires before sending them out. The questionnaires will be for early years people who have had experiences of working in this way and then I will also be interviewing some other professionals who have sat on a team. Meaning CAF/ TAC, as this is exactly what we are encouraged to use in early years.

Please could you  share your thoughts/ experiences and barriers that you have faced below? I can also priovide an email address if you would like to contact me directly rather than on a public forum.

Thanks,

Kat

Trying to get 2 professionals to agree a plan of action for the same child is like trying to round up cats

Even when it is obvious that extra assistance would be welcomed, each  professional is coming from a different standpoint and a different budget.

It may well be helpful if a parent could access Speach Therapy earlier rather than later for example, but if the waiting list is years long then the parent can sometimes feel pressured to accept some DIY notes from a clinic rather than waiting for the Speach Therapist

Plus personal opinion can vary greatly as to what constitutes "delay" in proportion to the budget that is available.

Not to say that professionals dont want to help, no money, no training, no staff - the list goes on.

Had child with obvious speach delay and previous Nursery told mum she would be ok when she learned to speak English as no-one could understand her when she spoke in Polish.

Wasnt talking Polish at all, just making sounds and no-one interested enough to find out.

Intensive one to one over a period of weeks and little girl chatting with a great deal of confidence. Not with Speach Therapist, just mum via internet information [thank goodness for google!] and sharing "how to" with key worker who took this on board.

Multi Agency working only happens on paper

Totally agree with Jumping Jax. Multi agency, like any other type of committee does not work for the end user.

Hi

I have had a pretty good experience with multi agency working as the manager SENCO and SG co-ord. i make an effort to go out of my way and make contact with different professionals from different services and this seems to have really helped with my multi agency working. It has allowed me to understand what they do and their constraints and they know mine. i would happily provide any more feedback if you would like or feel free to send me your questionnaire  to lsmith@queenspark.beds.sch.uk
