We have an American book called Children Tell Stories. The ISBN is 1-57274-663-7 It covers subjects such as what motivates children to tell stories, how to help children learn and tell stories, the difference between story reading and story telling, telling personal stories and poems, retelling stories. The book includes a DVD showing children telling their own stories. The book and DVD are primarily to help you teach children about storytelling however it will give you a good understanding of how storytelling links to language and imagination in areas such as repetition of words, rhymes, using gestures and guessing what comes next.

At my setting we use "Story sacks" from the toy libary. They have books such as "The big red bath" and " The animal Boogie" and in each sack there is the story book, soft toys so the children can get involved and tell the story, board games (for the older ones) and a music CD or DVD =]
The children love them!

I dont know if its too late for you now but i went on a brilliant course on storytelling. i cant remember the name of the man who ran it but he was one of pie corbetts team in oxfordshire. i think he is planning on setting up a story telling museum? he took us through the steps of how to get children story telling - hearing the story - making a story map using pictures - literally walking throught he steps of the story (a step for each part) - telling the story as a group in a circle (each person telling a small part) - telling the story to others - the secret is to keep telling the story! hope this helps.
