How do you link childrens individual observations and evaluations to your planning?

Hi all, I currently work in a day care nursery and im also in my 2nd year of the foundation degree. For one of my assignments which consists of an action research project I have got to change something within the setting and test it out over a number of weeks to see if has been improved. Although we currently have a good system in place for observations, planning and evaluations I would like to make the links between the observations and planning stronger as both myself and other staff members feel this needs to be improved slightly. I am currently working on a "Room story" in order to do this and would be very interested to know how you all incorperate this into your daily planning. Also do you carry out the planning daily, weekly or termly? Any feedback would be very much appreciated, Thanks

Hi,

We plan both daily & weekly- all planning is based on observations of interest (either from the parents or the staff team) Parents mostly share their observations informally, or make brief notes in a class interest book each morning.

Each staff member brings their observations to a staff meeting, and together we plan the "what nexts" for the child and help each other link the observation to the different areas of the EYFS.

So our observation form has space to record context, the content of the observation, links to the EYFS and what was planned as a next step so that parents can see the links between the curriculum areas and how the children learn through play (as the observations/work samples & photos are compiled and given to the parents.)

We also evaluate each day, thinking about what the children enjoyed, what they were interested in, what they initiated themselves and how these things could be extendedl, so the next day will be planned for by using both informal & formal observations (the written ones that are shared at the meeting & the informal observation/evaluation of each day.

Hope this makes sense!
