please help stop council closing our nursery
please help stop council closing our nursery

Brighton and hove council have just started the process to shut down Bright Start nursery.
We have been looking after children from 6 months to 5 years for the last 21 years.
Many staff have been part of that team for most of this town, providing great continuity of care for up to 1000 families.
To save money,(less than the council spends on french polishing, flowers and alcohol!)the council wants to close us down.
The team could end up unemployed(which will cost the taxpayer far more than our subsidy),and the children will struggle to find childcare. 26 will be starting primary school 4 months after the nursery is set to close.
Only one "cabinet" councillor has made this decision. But with enough signatures, a full council meeting, where the conservative administaration is in a minority, will be forced to debate and vote on the issue.
So please sign our petition

find out more at our website.
Thankfully, our parents and our Unison union branch has been great

and show support and get information (inc council documents, letters to local paper and video of parents, children and staff leading 1,500 on an ant-cuts march last weekend)

Please help us.
We're all in this together

it'd be great to link up with other nurseries who've been through similar.
here in brighton,we supported the staff fighting closure at sussex uni and brighton uni nurseries - both featured in nursery world.
Brighton uni had a great campaign, and won. unfortunately at sussex, they are now facing privatisation.
Anyone else got any stories?

Thinking outside of the box;
Would it be possible for the staff to take over from the counsil i.e. continue as a private nursery?
Just a thought

Agree with Kempe, can you not group together to save it? Or, why not sit down (all staff together) and put together a business plan to make the nursery run profitably or at least break even point. If you can prove to the powers that be that you will not cost them money in the future, they will surely be less inclined to shut you down.....?
You should be able to run profitably. If the setting was run privately, then it would be made to be profitable or at the very least break even!
