tea breaks!
tea breaks!

I work in a local authority nursery and my typical days starts at 8.30pm and ends at 4.30pm (though the last 20 minutes or so i am not paid for). Apart from lunch breaks (one hour long on 3 days a week and 45 mins long on two days.), I do not get any other breaks. Is this normal?

Why are you not paid for the last 20 minutes of work?

The session ends at 3.30 and the handover can take a while. I'm only paid until 4.10pm, but sorting out the nursery and outside play area after the day's activities, setting up for the following day and processing paper work takes more time than I am paid for.

Hi yorkshirelass,
i also work in a LEA nursery. twice a week a have a 1 hour lunch break, 3 times a week a have x2 30 minute breaks. My day also starts at 8:30 and finish at 4pm. Allocation of staff breaks was tricky at first but this works for us. We also offer 15 hours flexible provision. I understand the paperwork side of things also...we take an awful lot of it home.
:o)

Thanks for your thoughts on this Allie. Do you prefer the one hour lunch or the two breaks? Is there little difference between how "rested" you feel afterwards? And, how many of you are sharing the breaks?

Yes it's normal and within the legal framework - you do get longer than many people

Blimey!! That is a very generous place that you work for!! We work either 7.55- 4.05 or 8.55- 6.05 with a half hour break that s extended to 40 mins by starting and finishing at 5 to and 5 past. That's our lot.
