flour glue

I want to make a large castle with the children using egg cartons. I'm wondering if flour glue will be suitable and srong enough. I've never made it before if anyone can help me with a receipe I would really appreciate it. PVA glue would be expensive to use for the size I want to make.

you can water down the pva a bit 40 to 60 but flour glue will not be any good it crumbles when it is dry. how about string or wool? then they re using more skills

How old are the children?

Maybe that could be part of the activity, trying to figure out how to fix it together?

It would be good for problem solving skills and developing a bit of lateral thinking.

Thanks purepurple. Th children are 3 and 4 years old. I often say we need to involve the children and often I do with various things. Sometimes I get caught up in what I want to do and forget the basics.

Just in case you and your group decide to try out some alternative glues.

I came across this recipe for natural glue in: The creative family by Amanda Blake Soule.  I only came across it today and remembered your post, so I haven't tried it out......

Combine a 3:1 ratio of flour and sugar in a saucepan.  Slowly add cold water until a paste froms.  Stir over heat until the mixture thickens.  Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar.

It says; this glue will keep in the refridgerator for several weeks.  Allow the  glue to warm to room temperature before using it.

Coincidentally our role-play room has been transformed into a castle and would love to recreate a castle.  Confession -  junk-modelling is one of my weak points.  Am having trouble envisioning how you plan to use egg cartons to make it......would love some tips.

Kimme, I plan on using the egg cartons like blocks/bricks. Overlapping etc to make the walls strong, as in a building. I am intending to do it outside as it needs to be big enough to have a few children inside. Luckily we have a largr covered outside area we can use. It's an ongoing process as it will take a while to build. Children can come and go as they want and depending on our egg carton supply. You also nee/can leave space for windows and dooe.
