Day trials
Day trials

Was just wondering what everyones views on trails in nursery were? Do you agree in having them? Should they be part of the initial interview or as a seperate day?
Has anyone been paid to do a trial or received expenses for attending a trial?

We had 2 candidates who both showed huge promise but their strengths laid in totally different areas and so we decided to do a half day trial where we asked them to plan and deliver an activity.
I found it very beneficial as we were able to also see how they interacted with the team.
The trial was like a second call back so was not done on the initial interview day, this i think worked well.

i've done both of those, where you go for an interview they like you and ask you back for a 'working interview', and where you spend some time in the nursery and they take you out of the room for the interview process.
i think it should be down to the individual nursery as to whether they hold them and how they are carried out. i personally like them because you get to see the person and how they work with others and the children.
how many nursery owners out there have interviewed for someone and they could talk the talk but then started the job and were useless if you like when it came to actually doing it.
I have never been paid but i've also never felt like i was there because they were short on staff, i think it's wrong for a setting to use someone like that and not pay them

I don't do day trails as I feel that it is unlikely to get a true picture of a candidate's apptitude in one day as they will be understandably unsure of themselves and they will also be trying to give a possibly unsustainable performance. I just rely on my team of 4 interviewers who are all looking for different qualities and then I have the safety net of a 3 month probationary period if the chosen candidate doesn't work out.
I do however, ask the chosen candidate to come in for a post-selection induction day whereby once offered the position, they come in, have their induction and read and sign the policies.
