Word of mouth is key, but of no help when you're new and haven't had time to have lots of satisfied customers yet.
Have you got into the papers yet? The local ones are usually keen on pictures of cute kids doing things for charity. Get involved with your local community. Do some sort of stall at local fetes and things. Got a good web presence yet? Get a nice website.

Some nurseries have found that 'field marketing' works well - target places where parents and young children go, such as the supermarket and play park, speak to people with children and distribute leaflets promoting what your setting offers. Don't forget to include your contact details!

Do a plan,so you can budget. Vista print do some really cheap signs, postcards etc. get them every where! newsagents, dr's anywhere that has a notice board. Get yourself a coorporate image, something that everyone will start to recognise as being you. We do a VILP card(very important little person) we give these to every parent and if they recommend us then they get 5% discount fir 12months or until person leaves which ever sooner. think about your whole image i.e brochure and how you show people round when you do get them through the door
Good Luck

sparkie, some really good advice there and from previous history, Vistaprint is fantastic. The key is to order well in advance to get the lower postage rates to get an even better deal.

On the subject of websites, check out the Getting British Business Online website as you can get yourself a free website from them.
I'm currently also finishing off our new website which will contain tips ranging from setting up a nursery to marketing your nursery on a budget.
If you're interested, I can post the URL of the new site when it's launched.
As was mentioned previously though, getting the local media on board is essential and certainly don't rule out local TV and Radio. If you need a hand getting a list of contacts for your local media, I'd be happy to help out and can be reached on markb @ ncinsurance.co.uk
