I have completed your survey. I have to say though that as a qualified Anthropologist and as an ex Senior Lecturer in English as a Second Language (14 years full time service and a prior 5 years part time service) that I strongly disagree with staff using words in a child's mother tongue when the staff do not actually speak that language. It can cause more problems than it could ever address.

Having English as a second language in this country I can say that when I joined pre-school or toddler group as it was called in my day, it was great to hear a familiar greeting in my home language. I can remember it sounded a little off kilter, but the intonation and greeting were there and made me feel most welcome. From speaking to my mum about this she said she sat with the leader and taught her how to say a few words. I can only remember them saying hello to me and goodbye also the word for the toilet and some toys. It was a long time ago I grant that - but those frightening days when in a new country and with new people it really did help to have a few familiar words. Sometimes our research can take us into a different dimension and we can analyse too much. Most children grow up with a good command of both languages to include their home language.
