Should children be able to listen to the radio
Should children be able to listen to the radio
by: Jen Jen - 24-06-09 21:45
I work in a pre school room and would like some views on whether children should be able to listen to the radio for say a hour a day. children come into nursery singing all the latest pop songs and then are welcomed by nursery rhymes. Parents have also commented on why they dont have the radio on occasionally and am just wondering if anyone else has thought of this?

The problem with the radio as opposed to a CD is that you don't have any control over what is played and what is said which can then be difficult to police when something inappropriate is played or said. What would be appropriate to one parent might not be to another. You would need to decide if that would be ok or how that would that be managed.
Also in a multi-cultural setting some of the rap songs may contain lyrics the staff may not understand but some children do. I used to play the radio until one upset child told me the singer was saying bad words in his mother tongue and he covered his ears.

We play classic fm from time to time to our babies, they love it and often dance or move to the music, you can always check the programme listings to see if there may be something appropriate, our manager says that children should be exposed to as many different types of music as possible but we assume that they hear plenty of 'pop' so we would not play that. You could find some Jazz cds, or folk music, and music from other countries etc, you will be surprised at how well they respond!

Mickey, you're right, we had a discussion on listening to the radio earlier this year, 'Music'.
Is anyone familiar with Susan Stranks' tireless campaigning for a children's radio station? She's the co-ordinator of the National Campaign for Children's Radio. She recently wrote an 'In my view' column on the subject outlining how listening to children's radio can help children's language acquisition and listening skills: 'Listening to reason' (30 April 2009).
The latest news story we ran on the campaign was 'Children's radio bid promotes SLCN plans' (9 April 2009).

NO! music should be for a music or sensory activity not just background noise which has a negative impact on experiences.

Thanks for that Annette
As a DJ , I'm not against music Full-Stop, But in the setting is a whole different Ball Park
I know most Setting or Rooms do not have a Online PC, Firstly it would be open to abuse,Secondly the net connection would cost a lot, Even with routers. But on Windows Media Player, for those who use this player, Will or may be know about the raddio tuner built into the player. Anyway there is a Child's radio station that you can get to, they vary in what they do and play, Yea 6 o clock is storey time.... the point is there are stations on the net that look after our children's needs.
Cd's in a Rooms Is it a bad idea. What happens when your driving and that tune comes on you really like, It lifts your mood etc. Would this be the same for nursery staff, Or would it be a distraction....As for panpipes of a dinner sleep time, How many times was i chilled out. Pan pipes on Blinds closed. Hot room. Kids on bean bags, sleepy sleepy....
tutu Music should be for sensory rooms, Sorry No.disco lights, Bubble tubes, Why should'nt all children access these great pieces of kit? Music can be great, Look at it this way, You can not get away from music. It's everywhere

We used to pay classical music (no copyright problems!) on our digital photo frames in the lobby. Both the children and parents liked it for about a week then requested it be turned off! The background noise was too distracting for staff.

Mickey I've just thought of a great job for you with your DJ skills. What about offering your services at nurseries doing mini-discos?

I feel that as long as the 'music' or radio listened to is done with the childrens consent/request, then it can only add to the atmosphere. Having some 'noise' in the background can be extremely distracting especially if the child has other factors hindering thier abilty to focus on the tasks they are doing. This said though, we often have music or spoken word on during lunchtimes and other activities where the varying emotions evoked by the music can influence the childrens creativity and moods. Soft classical or softly spoken word stories/poems to calm things down, or lively music/silly stories/rhymmes will invigorate the dullest cold afternoon and some amazing craft or roleplay can be achived!!
I went to our local book store and asked for spoken word in a variety of different languages so that the children within the setting can be exposed to a blend of global sounds. The staff at the store were very helpfull and unearthed various 'global' music tracks for me too as well as spoken word C.D's with accompanying books. A fantastic investment enjoyed even after 8-9 years.

an hour is way too long. speak to your speech therapists and early years advisors and they will all say no. it is YOUR job to be with the children and considering the research which says that nearly 60 % of children have NO interaction with anyone during a session this is where you should be concentrating your efforts.
