The number of children that a childminder can look after is decided by Ofsted during registration.

A maximum of six children under the age of eight can be cared for. But not all childminders are registered to care for the maximum number, factors including space are taken into consideration.

The same rules apply for an assistant. So in theory you may be able to care for a maximum of 12 children between you, depending on what Ofsted decide.

Im sure as well that if you have more than 10 children it is classed as a business and planning permission is needed to run a business from home.

Most childminder's are self-employed, but may employ an assistant or work with other minders. If more than three work together at any one time they have to re-register with Ofsted as childcare on domestic premises. You should always consult with the local planning authority as the numbers allowed will vary according to local conditions/area etc.
