twos and threes in same room

Just wondered how many of you have twos and threes in same room and how you find it ? We have upto eight twos and 16 threes at any one time but find it a struggle to complete any focussed activity to move the threes on as the twos take up most of our time especially as one child goes round scratching the others without ono to one support.

We were critiscised by early years advisors for bringing 2.5 year olds up  to pre-school as they were not ready for large group time and could not be expected to sit still for large or small group time.  Now we move children on developmental needs so a young 2 may move up before an older 2 if they are ready and require more stimulation.

Both my settings are mixed 2-4 year olds. Some of the younger one's are JUST 2! We make sure everything is safe for the younger children but also make sure there is something more challenging for the 4 yr olds.

3.58 of the EYFS framework states:Except in childminding settings, there should be a separate baby room for children under the age of two. However, providers must ensure that children in a baby room have contact with older children and are moved into the older age group when appropriate.

The setting I work in has a mix of 2, 3 and 4 year old in the same room (we only have the one room) and it works very well.

The older children get to help the younger ones and the younger ones learn from the older ones.

It can be a challenge but we try to have a mix of activities so there is aways something for the different ages and stages of the children.

We recognise the differentitaion is in the outcome of the activity, so while the children may do the same activity they will all be getting something different from it.
