Hi everyone, just wanted to ask those of you that work in private day nurseries where you change nappies? In the main room or out?

Thanks

Thanks, I work in the richmond borough and we have been told by council we have to change nappies in the main room now. Taking away the sand and messy area in the under 2's!

What reason did they give for the nappy changing to happen in the room?

I've worked in a setting where the changing occured in the same room up to the age of 18/24 months and then moved into the changing area in the toilet in the 2-3 room and in my current setting the changing area is in the toilet.

Where I work at the moment, The little toddlers get taken through the big toddler room, then through the pre-school room into a huge whole nursery changing and toilet area. I think they should get changed in the room.

In my preschools we have one play room with a changing table in and another changing table in the toilet area.

Our LA advised us to also have nappy changing in the rooms and they put a safeguarding angle on this following the Plymouth SCR. I put an Infection Control, dignity and Food Hygiene angle on this and our children and babies continue to be changed in the toilets on a purpose built area, where germs can be contained and not circulated around the children.

If in doubt, ask Ofsted!

I find this bizarre. At my old nursery the door of the changing room was to be left open if there was only one member of staff in there (ideally there'd be two but it wasn't always possible), which is fair enough. But changing them in the rooms is both unhygienic and means there's a complete lack of privacy. Would you have toilets randomly dotted around like chairs too? I hate when people are allowed to make up silly rules like this. Maybe you should ask them to go to the loo with an audience and see how they like it.
