by: Lausie x - 01-09-10 13:11

Im in the process of opening up my own nursery. I have a name sorted but i would love some good names for my three rooms! Im having a baby room, toddler room and pre-school room! Im struggling to come up with some effective ones. The name of my nursery will be Wiggles and Giggles Nursery School. any suggestions will be welcomed!

Do you need to name them if you only have three rooms?

What an awlful name for a nursery!

It's not easy trying to convince some people that nurseries can be educational while encouraging learning through play.  Giving a nursery a name like Wiggles and Giggles will make it near to impossible.

Just call them :"Baby Room", "Toddler Room" and "Pre-Scool Room.

Or to go with the nursery name: "Cuddly Crawlers", "Jiggly Jumpers" and "Bouncy Big-uns".

Im sorry, i realise everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i really had to comment.

I really dont think she came on here and posted this to be criticised about the name of her nursery. To be honest when i look at nurseries i do not judge it on its name, good or not, i would rather judge it on the care of the children. Just because thats the name does not mean that children will not be encouraged to learn through play. Time will tell when she is up and running about whether parents are put off by the name.

Rooms dont really need to be called names, but it does make it a bit more fun for the children, especially the pre-school age.

Good luck with the nursery :)

This is exactly the reason that I don't come on here as often as I used to, of late I have found people to be nasty, judgemental and quite horrible to people wanting advice etc. We are supposed to be a caring profession; some of the people on here need to remember that. No doubt I will get slated by the usual few!!!!

There are quite a few nurseries called Wiggles and Giggles, and the name works well. It's easy to remember, it rolls off the tongue and has a bit of a "ring to it". As a business identity I certainly wouldn't knock it. As I said previously do you need to name them with only three? We have 8 which are named and the names are used regularly by staff, however in the other nursery we have 7 and they are named and not used, referred to as pre-school, toddlers etc etc... When we tell parents its the pre-school room, they know its the 4 year olds, but when we go this is "x" room the look of blankness says it all.

I do agree maestro,  that sometimes names for rooms arnt ever used and parents just refer to it as 2-3's or toddlers etc. Sometimes it works, but like you said it has to be the staff who constantly refer to the rooms, so parents get the idea. However, i do have to just say that i think 'jelly babies' 'Jelly tots' and 'jelly beans' is really cute, probably wouldnt catch on but i think its sweet. :)

and red sun, i to thought we were a caring profession... apprently not!

I find that pre-school children tend to refer to the room with the babies in as the baby room regardless of what it's official name is.

Yes Maestro, It's memorable and gives a very definate signal of the ethos of the nursery to anybody that hears it. There is a nursery near me called something like "Little Frogs Educational Nursery School". You would expect a very different service from 'Wiggles and Giggles' than you would an 'Educational Nursery School'. Many people would not contemplate sending their child to a nursery call 'Wiggles and Giggles' in the same way I would never work somewhere calling themselves an 'Educational' nursery. She is aiming at a very 'play' orientated customer base and will put off people looking for a more formal learning method.

Names SAY things about a nursery.

I think I would go for a neutral name based on where it is. "Swindon Day Nursery" for example, would appeal to a wide range of customers. Naming after a town also gives a nursery the feeling that it's been around a long time even if it hasn't. "Oak Tree Farm Nursery" would give the impression of a relaxed rural nursery in tune with the seasons and the outdoors. "Acres of Joy Nursery" implies that there's a big garden attached.

The only things I really hate in a name are spelling mistakes such as "Kidz".

Spellings such as "Kidz" markets to the younger generation of parents imo. I hate it aswell but the name serves a purpose I suppose. The nursery has "Nursery School" on the end which implies there is an educational feel of the setting. The word school immediately suggests to most that it is a place of learning. Can't believe we're discussing names of nurseries as it really is personal choice and you can not market yourself to everyone.

Naming a nursery isn't a personal choice. It's a buisness decision. If you don't attract customers your nursery will lose money and eventually shut.

It depends what market you are aiming at, not all parents fall into the same category, so I would say its personal choice. We can agree to disagree :-)

I too am thinking of opening a nursery and am struggling with name ideas. I'm Australian which is causing a complication as everything I come up with and tell people about they look at me blankly and say "what on earth does that mean", like "gum nut babies" which would be really well known and recognised at home, but no one here knows what I'm on about... so I agree that naming a nursery has to be a business choice as well as personal preference. I keep coming back to neutral names like flowers, or plants/trees like "the Willows". Having said that, I really like wiggles and giggles as it gives the impression that it's a fun, exciting place for children to explore and learn!

I like the idea of naming rooms, I think it gives them a sense of identify. For something like wiggles and giggles names of animals that move in some kind of wiggly fashion might be good... like caterpillars, ladybirds, etc???

I'll keep pondering and post again if I can think of anything more insightful to add :o)

"I really like wiggles and giggles as it gives the impression that it's a fun, exciting place for children to explore and learn!"

What bit of the name does that?! Where does it has anything to do with either exploring or learning? It sound like a place that children go to to wiggle and giggle.

I suggest calling yours   "Little Kangaroo's Explory Learnatorium".

What!

Nothing says 'explore and learn' more than an Explory Learnatorium.

It was that or a  'Learnicatory Exploradrome'

Not many of you have read this request correctly.  Lausie X is asking for names of 'rooms' NOT a change of name for her nursery which she is happy with the name already chosen.  Pay attention!!

Someone got a little side tracked. What did you go for Lausie?
