Hi, everyone! I'm taking a master degree in Childhood studies. These days I have been thinking about dissertation topics. I think it would be better to have a clear idea before seeing my supervisor. I would here your suggestions and advices.

I'm interested in early childhoood. I  have been volunterring in a nusery school last year, this experience lead to think about my disstation relate to children in nuseries.

One problem I have found is this: when a child could not speak English( I'm studying in UK), he has less contact with other children. He often plays alone, because he cannot communicate with others, nor can they understand him.  I wonder will any problem occuer in his late days due to this early influence. What should early practitioners do to help these children from minorities group.( This boy is the only one whose mother tongue is not English)

Another topic I'm interested in is how to build a nusery that can best protect children's rights to play. Some nuseries have their own gardens where chidren can play outside, some have kept little rabbits to enhace children's interaction with animals. Some nuseries are not equipped with electronic devices in fear of harming children's early development. I want to know how to construct a good nusery to best protect children's rights to play.

These are the currently ideas in my mind. I welcome any suggestions and comments. Thanks.

In my years of working with children, I found that bilingual children did speak later, but that when they grasped both (or more!) languages they then communicated and played more. For example a little lad who started at 10 months mainly kept to himself initially, but by the time he got to pre school he was a ring leader so to speak. Some staff members spoke his home language as well as English, and he seemed to switch easily. I believe the younger they start the easier it is, as it becomes 'natural' to them. We also had a child start at 2 years old who didn't speak a word of English. We had phrases in his Mother Tongue we used with him, which helped somewhat, but in time (a few months) he started playing alongside then with other children, at first in the garden going on the slide etc, which then extended to building towers with wooden bricks, then before we knew it he had a 'friend' in the room.

Also maybe you could visit a few nurseries, offer to work voluntarily for a morning at a few to help with this topic, then you can gather knowledge from experience as well as see first hand how the children are in such nurseries, look at ofsted reports etc. :)
