Help!!! Under 2's

by: Blondiesooty - 18-04-12 16:00

Hi all

I have always worked with the over 3's and have now been asked to work with the under 2's. Is the eyfs any different for them?? I am worried they will not stimulate me enough. What sort of things can i do with them. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Download the latest EYFS and have a really good read of the development matters.  It should be more of a case of will you stimulate them enough, not them stimulate you!

Follow the children's/babies' lead. Think sensory and exploratory and remember your risk assessments - very different for this age group!

Also remember their limited experience of the real world - in my experience they love domestic role play but anything else is beyond their real life experience and they're not interested in.

A lot of your time will be spent in feeding and changing nappies and other care routines but these are a good opportunity to really get to know the children. You should be amimg to get to know them as individuals and spend a lot of time 1-1 reading stories, chatting or just having cuddles. Children this age need to form attachmnets to their carers. When you know them, then you can plan individual activities for them. When they know and trust you then they will be at their best and you shouldn't really get any bad behaviour. They definitely need basic needs meeting first, do this and the rest is easy.

It should be them who are being stimulated not you. I have worked with all ages but love the under twos. They learn from you and the activities you supply them with. Sensory play, treasure baskets,  messy play, my list is endless. As long as you take health and safety issues into account alot of activities you do with the older children can be used for under two's as well. But first as 'purepurple' says you need to build a caring and trusting relationship with them.
