Also, I should add that a 'Foundation Degree' is not actually a Degree

Yes, I've done both. Well, a foundation degree and then a top-up to BA Hons.

I have learnt a lot, not just about early years but about myself as well.

The only thing i'm finding is that working with girls who are just finishing their level 3s, there is a big gap in their knowledge and mine, which I find frustrating.

The foundation degree is the first part of your full degree, you then go onto BA and then EYP and/or honours.

I'd definitely say do it...its the best thing I started!! I finished my foundation degree last year and am starting my third year with EYP in September.

Purepurple i totally agree its so difficult especially when there is a big group of young inexperienced and newly qualified in the same setting #nightmare. I really think the nurseries would be a hell of a lot better with all graduates the standards of care and particularly education would be immense maybe then we would get the professional recognition we SO deserve.....and the pay packet too :P

I have a FD and have just completed the BA (Hons) in Ed and Training Studies... Thoroughly enjoyed both. I highly recommend them.

Hasn't made much difference to my pay but it has to me as a person and as a professional. I handed in my dissertation a week ago and am missing uni already... Wondering what to do next! Back to working 5 days a week like the rest! I've enjoyed having a day off for uni for the last 5 years.

Good luck with your choices :)

I've just finished my FD and now starting top-up BA degree, I did it part-time (sat) because is supported a child and could not have time off. So going full time is going to cost me £9000 because local authority are not funding anymore, I'm really cheesed off because I only embarked because it was being funded..... And been told my FD will be worth nothing in couple years time... Its funny because I signed an agreement that if I dropped out I would have to pay the money back... yet they not followed my path to ensure we have an graduate in our nursery by 2015....... I've had so many phone calls letters ect... I'm so angry I'm old school and dont believe I should go into debt when I was told it would be free. Moan over sorry for my rant!!!

the likelihood of you paying back a loan in childcare is minimal you ll never earn much. they ve paid two years worth when in every other sector you pay for your own academic quals. get on with it and stop moaning. its for YOU so invest or not but remember the money theyre saving is payiong for a child who needs support not a worker who fancies learning.

What is the point in getting a degree, into debt, and all that time and energy for such a low paid job? If it wasn't sexist against males the pay rate would not be so low, it's a joke.

Foundation Degree is definitely a Degree...It is half a degree but it is called Foundation Degree for a reason. Just had to clear that up.

I asked the same question before enrolling in college myself. The foundation degree (2 years) is work-based and so expects students to have experience in child-care based occupations. The BA (3 years) is aimed more at students with little work experience. I took the foundation degree and am just about to conclude my 3rd year to top up to the BA (hons). It's been a slog but I've learned so much, it's been an invaluable experience.
