Starting a new nursery

Starting a new nursery

by: Victoria Gillings - 11-02-13 12:36

I have searched on this topic as i know it annoys people to give the same advice, but most topics seem to be from 2 or 3 years ago.

I am very intersted in either starting a new nursery or buying one, starting in around 6 months time. when i was working in a nursery 4 years ago the were very good profit margins, although i get the feeling that now the profit is nothing like as good. Am i right in this assumption?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated? Also how easy would it be to get finance, i hear mixed reviews about it/

I recommend childminding with an assistant your overheads are less, your premesis your own and your relationships with children and parents more one to one.  I only recommend purchasing a Nursery if you are buying the premesis and have a large cash sum behind you for investment + a business qualification and excellent family support your going to need it!

If you don't have any business experience or have a large sum of cash then I would agree with bagpuss and start by becoming a registered childminder.

If you really don't want to go down that route than to answer your questions, some banks are lending but you will need a very robust business plan, including sound financial forcasts based on very realisitc start up, growth and expenditure costs.

Owning and manging a nursery is not for the faint hearted, its extremely hard work and the profilt margins for independent nurseries is not huge. you will need to ensure you have sufficient cash flow to pay all he fixed costs including staff wages with possibly very low income levels for at least the first year to 18months after opening. contact me if you would like a 1-2-1 chat askaskew@btinternet.com 07791552767
