i am totally shocked by the response of an Ofsted staff member today and I am now wondering if it is me! A previous collegue who works in a different setting to me had posted photos of themselves in uniform on there facebook page. I gave them a friendly message pointing out to be very careful as they could get into all sorts of trouble. Then today there are innocent photos of two staff with a child. i tried phoning the nursery but the owner who i know vaguely hasn't been in for three weeks and they didn't know when to expect her, and the people on the photos are management! I blocked them on facebook and spoke to Ofsted. the wally on the desk said she didn't want to take it furthur as I couldn't prove that they didn't have parental permission to display the photo. have I mis read the croxton report and the EYFS reforms to safeguarding and mobile phones. Because i forced the issue i got passed her and the compliance have taken it up. I just looked at their OFSTED report and 8 months ago they were found'guilty' of failing to safeguard a child from a staff member....is it me are my complete block on all mobiles etc ott?

i am shocked by this, all the settings i have worked in mobile phones were not allowed on the premises unless they were provided by the setting! x

the fact is you dont have a clue about whethe they have given permission, is it a nursery page or a personal page? were they pics parents took and passed on etcetc etc you have no idea, they wil investigate but you are making massive assumptions. its not your nursery youve pssed it on its now not your business

It was personal, true are assumptions but its the fact they were so unprofessional as to display it. and having to argue with ofsted. Glad you agree about not having phones idiot at ofsted didn't!

Wow, talk about a massive over-reaction!
You really phoned Ofsted over this?
Why?
I don't get it. I really don't.
What sorts of trouble could she get in for posting a photo in her uniform?
Mobile phones are not the issue- it's the people who use them.
Sounds like the Ofted person was trying to tell you this.

I can understand the photo without permission of a child (if that is the case) although posting photos in uniform??
Also, am I missing the point? Who said the photo was taken on a mobile phone? Could have been taken on a digital camera?

so you dont see it as problem having photo of someone elses child on a personal facebook page or taking photos even if on camera and posting it on personal facebook page?

Like I said, I can understand your point in relation to using children's photos without permission on a website, IF that is the case!

I don't think I would want to work anywhere where mobile phones were completely banned. I don't really drive (I have a scooter but it's not really practical to use to get to work at the minute, so I get the bus) so what would I do - leave my phone at home? And then what happens if I get into a situation outside of work where a mobile phone would have been extremely useful? As long as mobile phones are used only in the staffroom then I can't see the problem. I don't see the point in treating everyone like they're a criminal when you can simply ask them not to use them in areas where there may be children.
As for the pictures, it does seem unprofessional to post pictures like that, but we don't know the circumstances and I certainly think telling Ofsted was a bit extreme. I feel that working in nurseries is getting very difficult recently because people are so quick to tittle-tattle every little thing to Ofsted. It's pathetic.

All settings should have a mobile phone policy (I say through gritted teeth) but it is up to the setting to define the policy. My settings have a policy which asked that all mobile phones -staff (except managers who often need to be a able to take calls away from a landline) visitors, assessors, parents etc are turned off while they are on our premises.
A friend of mine actually takes your mobile and puts is in one of her lockers! Hence I leave mine in the car when I visit so I don't forget to collect it!
Facebook is a social networking site so I cannot see why staff uniform should be banned. I ask my staff not to comment on work matters in their statuses but I persoanlly use facebook to promote my settings. Many of our parents put up photos from parties and tag the staff, I think this is acceptable and sociable.
