Is pre-school the best way to describe the year before school?

Is pre-school the best way to describe the year before school?

I have decided I don't like the term 'pre-school' as it suggests that everything we do is just preparation for school. I feel that this time is an important stge in it's own right, with lots to experience and learn.

Children are not 'pre' anything, they are in their present stage of development. Their early years are as important, if not more important, than school.

So, what can I call my pre-school room?

What do you call yours?

I know reception classes are noe being referred to as Foundation Units, which I like. The whole nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage , so I can't call it the Foundation Room.

Any ideas?

I know what you mean, I've always HATED the term pre-school. I once did a course entitled 'The Importance of Being Four' and although I've no ideas for you I quite like the title of that.

They used to be called playgroups or playschool, didn't they.  How about the Early Learning Zone?

What other rooms have you got - how are you dividing the children?

we have a baby room, a tinies room and two toddler rooms. In the pre-school room itself, we have three groups, each the name of a colour.

I do like the Early Learning Zone too!

Apart from the fact it implies learning does not occur prior to this.

No it doesn't, it's just a catchy, inspiring name.
