Parent's guides
Parent's guides

I'm planning some more parent's guides to run in Nursery World and just wondered whether there are any topics that you think would be particularly useful to cover?
Recent issues include: sun safety, travelling with children, healthy eating, cot death, dealing with divorce and starting school. The next will look at oral hygiene.
Thanks!
Annette

How to dress your child appropriately for nursery
How to pay your nursery fees
How to realise the world is not made of cotton wool and children will have accidents
I'm just just joshin, that said...
I would actually like to see some on sleeping problems/effective sleep routines. Home discipline/behaviour instead of blackmail and do what you want, and toileting.

Thank you for your great suggestions! Joking aside, I think the importance of risk would be a good subject too.

We are constantly asked about sleeping problems by the parents. We did have a booklet but it went walkies, so if you did anything on sleep it would be a good send.

I'd like some on development - don't expect your child to come to pre-school and learn to read and write at three!
I agree with sleep problems and maybe some on sharing books or too much tv/approprite programmes for children (for example MOT primevil that is on at 7pm!)
Toileting definately! some parents really don't know and just leave it to us eventaully.
Money management - pay your fees, it's as important as your weekly shopping!

We had a parent look round and ask if we would potty train her daughter. She was 14 months old and mum couldn't understand why her daughter kept putting the potty on her head, and screamed when she sat her on it.

Maestro, some parents, eh!
I have been asked by a parent of a 3 year old to potty train him. He does 1 day at nursery.
'so, does he use the potty at home then?' I ask
'no' mum replied
cut to me head in hands, pulling hair out
(This is not her first child by the way)
Toilet training would be great
as well a s healthy eating (including why it's not good for a toddler to have a beaker of juice to drink out of all day)
Also, how to be organised and read letters and posters at nursery and not rely on the staff to verbally tell you everything (my pet hate)

Can you give parents some help on the reasons why nursery staff don't want to see their sick and ill children, when they should be at home. 48 hours 48 hours get that message to them and I'll buy you chocolate!!!!!

Ooh if there's chocolate on offer I'll certainly see what I can do!!
Thanks for all your suggestions!

From a childminder's point of view the following might be useful -
How to collect your child on time... or let your childminder know if you're going to be late... yes it does make a difference, s/he has a life too...
How to keep your childminder happy by paying him/her on time...
How to work with your childminder by sending spare clothes / nappies / wipes / medication on the day requested...
How to ring your childminder before leaving the house so your childminder does not have to make doorstep decisions about the health of your child... closely linked with please do not mask symptoms with Calpol then turn your phone off at 12 when it's worn off!!
How to respect your childminder's house by not walking in wearing shoes that have been dragged through mud or worse...
How to leave at the end of the day in a timely fashion because your childminder is tired and does not want to hear your child screaming and watch him climb on her sofas while you chatter on about nothing...
I'm sure there are more if you want them, I'll ask a few friends :))

Following all your helpful comments, I've asked Penny Tassoni to write a parent's guide for us on sleep routines. We'll run it in Nursery World early September.
I'll line up some more of your suggestions too,
Annette
